A Practical Guide to Crop PDF

Crop PDF trims excess whitespace and borders from every page using a single adjustable margin, applied uniformly across the whole document — useful for tightening up a PDF with wide margins before printing, or removing scanner-added borders from a scanned document.

Step-by-step: trimming margins

  1. Upload your PDF.
  2. Set the trim margin using the slider (5–80 points).
  3. Apply to process every page with that margin.
  4. Download the cropped result.

One margin, applied to every page

The current tool applies a single uniform margin to all four sides of every page — there's no per-page or freeform crop-box selection yet. This works well for a document with consistent margins throughout, but if different pages need different amounts trimmed, a single pass won't handle that; you'd need to crop, then adjust the margin and crop specific pages separately using page-selection tools like Extract Pages to isolate them first.

Why cropping doesn't shrink file size much

Cropping changes the page's visible area, but the content that ends up outside the new margin isn't deleted from the underlying file — it's just no longer displayed. Because of that, cropping alone won't meaningfully reduce file size the way compression does. If a smaller file is what you're after, use Compress PDF instead or in addition.

Troubleshooting

  • "The crop removed too much / too little." Re-upload the original and adjust the margin slider — cropping doesn't destroy the source content, so you can always retry with a different value.
  • "My file size didn't change after cropping." Expected — cropping hides content outside the margin rather than deleting it, so it isn't a size-reduction step.
  • "I need different margins on different pages." Not currently supported in one pass — the same margin applies to every page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I crop a different area on each page?

Not currently — the same margin is trimmed from every page uniformly rather than a freeform, per-page crop box.

Does cropping delete the content outside the margin?

No. It hides that content by adjusting the page's visible area, but the underlying data isn't permanently deleted.

Will cropping make my file smaller?

Not by much, since the content outside the crop isn't deleted, only hidden. Use Compress PDF if a smaller file size is the goal.

Can I undo a crop?

Re-upload your original file and crop again with a different margin — the original file itself is never modified.
